Celebrities Are Not Role Models

As we all know Celebrities can have a lot of influence among people, especially children. With their limelight on social and mainstream media, their actions often impact the fans and can cause them to follow the celebrities. However, these effects do not mean that they are role models or should be held responsible for the actions of their fans.

On Saturday, a fan spoke on Cardi's words within the public for young girls. "I love you A LOT but I don't agree with the messages you've been sending us young girls," the fan continued, "So many of us look at you as a role model and that should send a very loud message." The rapper responded in which she opened up about her struggle with staying true to self since embarking her career as a rapper. “For these past two years I been watching what I say and I haven’t been myself. I been feeling trap and sad cause it’s not ME but everybody tell me to be it for me to be this “rolemodel”and guess what ? People still spit my past right in my face so for now imma be my old self again.”

Cardi B became popular based off doing videos on Instagram, being a well-known stripper from the Bronx, and a reality star on Love and Hip-Hop New York. In which the rapper was being herself. So why does Cardi have to change who she is now for everyone (young and old fans) to respect her? Where are the parents who are supposed to watch what their children absorb or hear on social media, if they find issue with Cardi's language?

Now I understand that celebs, especially like Cardi B, they have such big followings and fan bases which make them feel like they are responsible within society for certain actions. However, they are also not obligated not to feel like they need to be on their best behaviors all the time. Personally, I feel like they should remain true to themselves instead of trying to please everyone evoking this false demeanor on themselves.

As a people, we need to stop holding Celebrities to such a high standard within society. While I understand their impact on the public, ultimately they are not forcing no one to follow them or to be like them. They are human just like us, the general public, and most of the time do things for entertainment purposes. Parents need to be more responsible for what they allow their kids to listen and watch on these public platforms. Cardi B cannot please everyone, and it would be completely biased if she attempted to do so anyway.
